A single skin plastic oil tank is a storage vessel made from a single layer of UV-stabilised medium-density polyethylene. Unlike bunded tanks, they do not have a 'tank within a tank' secondary containment system, making them a more compact and cost-effective option for specific installation scenarios.
In the UK, single skin tanks can typically only be installed at domestic properties where the capacity is under 2,500 litres and a formal fire and environmental risk assessment (TI/133D) confirms there is no risk to the local environment. They cannot be used if the tank is near a watercourse, borehole, or manhole, or for any commercial applications.
The main benefits are their lower purchase price and smaller physical footprint. Because they lack an outer bund, they are lighter and easier to maneuver into tight garden spaces. They are an excellent 'like-for-like' replacement for older single skin tanks in low-risk residential areas.
Our plastic single skin tanks are manufactured from high-quality, UV-protected materials and typically come with a 2 to 5-year manufacturer’s warranty. With a professional installation and a solid base, they have a projected service life of 20 years, though they should be inspected annually for signs of sun damage or stress.
Just like bunded models, single skin tanks must be installed on a flat, level, and fire-resistant base, such as 50mm thick concrete or paving slabs. The base must support the entire bottom of the tank and extend 300mm beyond all sides to ensure structural stability and compliance.
The Tank Shop stocks single skin models from leading UK manufacturers including Titan (Kingspan), Deso, and Harlequin. These brands are chosen for their reliability and compliance with current EN13341 manufacturing standards.
No, you cannot retroactively add a bund to a single skin tank. If your environmental risks change (for example, if a new borehole is sunk nearby) or if regulations tighten, you would need to replace the entire unit with a factory-made bunded oil tank.
Most of our single skin plastic tanks are compatible with standard Kerosene (C1/C2) and Gas Oil. While many are suitable for HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), you should always check the specific product technical sheet to ensure the material is rated for the specific bio-fuel blend you intend to use.
