Oil Tank Fire Barrier SetFire Resistant Barrier Panel For Oil Tanks - 30 Minute Fire Wall
Fire resistant barrier panels are specialized fire-rated boards designed to provide a thermal shield between an oil tank and a nearby structure or boundary. They allow for the legal installation of an oil tank in tight spaces where standard OFTEC separation distances (such as 1.8m from a building) cannot be met.
A fire barrier is required if your oil tank is located less than 1.8 metres from a non-fire rated building or opening (like a window or door), less than 760mm from a boundary (like a wooden fence), or near a flue outlet. These panels provide the necessary fire protection to comply with UK Building Regulations and OFTEC standards.
Most of our fire resistant barrier panels offer a 30-minute fire rating, which is the standard requirement for domestic oil tank installations. This rating ensures that the barrier can withstand a fire for at least half an hour, preventing the heat from reaching the fuel stored in the tank.
Yes, fire resistant barrier panels are often a much more cost-effective and less intrusive solution than building a traditional masonry fire wall. They are quicker to install, take up less space, and do not require extensive foundation work, making them ideal for retrofitting or small garden spaces.
The panels are typically mounted on a steel or timber support frame situated between the tank and the protected structure. It is vital that the barrier extends at least 300mm beyond the highest and widest points of the tank to ensure a complete thermal break and compliance with safety regulations.
Absolutely. Fire resistant barrier panels are universal and can be used to protect any type of oil tank, whether it is plastic or steel, slimline or horizontal. They are designed to be weather-resistant and durable for long-term outdoor use.
These panels are designed to be low-maintenance and weather-resistant. However, it is recommended to inspect the support frame for stability annually and ensure the panels remain securely fixed and free from significant physical damage to maintain their fire-rated integrity.
While the physical installation of the panels can be done by a competent tradesperson, the overall oil tank installation must be certified by an OFTEC-registered technician or inspected by Local Authority Building Control to ensure the barrier meets the specific safety requirements for your property.
