Tanks of this magnitude are industrial-grade solutions used for major logistical hubs, district heating schemes, large-scale manufacturing plants, and backup power systems for data centres or hospitals. They are designed for high-volume fuel consumers who require maximum strategic reserves and the ability to accept full articulated tanker deliveries.
At capacities exceeding 20,000 litres, storage solutions are almost exclusively manufactured from high-grade structural steel. Steel provides the necessary structural integrity to hold the immense weight of the fuel and allows for the sophisticated internal bracing required for such large volumes, which exceeds the capabilities of standard plastic moulding.
These tanks must strictly adhere to the Oil Storage Regulations (England) 2001 and the PPG2 (Pollution Prevention Guidelines). They must be bunded to 110% capacity, fitted with high-level overfill prevention alarms, and often require permanent leak detection systems. Because of their size, they are also subject to specific Planning Permission and Building Control oversight.
A 20,000 litre tank filled with kerosene or diesel will have a total weight (including the steel structure) of approximately 20 to 25 tonnes. Larger models, such as 30,000 or 50,000 litre tanks, can weigh upwards of 50 tonnes. A bespoke, reinforced concrete raft foundation, engineered to local ground conditions, is mandatory.
Yes, one of the major benefits of steel tanks in this size range is the ability to create 'multi-compartment' setups. This allows a single 20,000+ litre unit to be split into separate internal sections to store, for example, 15,000 litres of Diesel and 5,000 litres of AdBlue or Gas Oil, each with its own independent pumping equipment.
Delivery is managed via specialist heavy-lift logistics. Due to their dimensions, they are often classified as 'abnormal loads' and require specialized transport. Installation usually involves a large-scale crane hire (contract lift) to safely position the tank onto its prepared foundation.
For industrial users, we provide advanced Fuel Management Systems (FMS). These allow for key or fob-authorised dispensing, real-time tank level monitoring via cloud-based software, and automated re-order alerts to ensure that your critical fuel supply is never depleted.
Absolutely. Since these tanks are fabricated from steel, they can be custom-engineered to fit specific site footprints, whether you require a 'super-slim' long tank or a taller, vertical cylinder. We can also customise the placement of access manways, fill points, and dispensing cabinets to suit your operational workflow.
