A waste oil tank is a purpose-built storage container designed for the safe and legal collection of used oils, such as engine oil, hydraulic oil, and other lubricants. You need one to comply with environmental regulations, as pouring waste oil down drains or storing it in unsuitable containers can lead to heavy fines and significant environmental damage.
Yes. Under UK environmental legislation, waste oil is considered a hazardous substance. Therefore, all waste oil tanks must be bunded (double-skinned) to provide 110% secondary containment. This ensures that any spills or leaks from the inner tank are safely caught by the outer bund.
Unlike standard fuel tanks, waste oil tanks feature a large 'tundish' or collection bowl with a strainer. This allows users to easily pour used oil into the tank while catching any filters, rags, or debris. They also typically include a high-level alarm and a vent to prevent the buildup of gasses.
Waste oil tanks are essential for vehicle repair garages, MOT centres, bus depots, agricultural workshops, and industrial manufacturing plants. Any business that services machinery or vehicles must have a compliant way to store used lubricants before they are collected by a licensed waste carrier.
Plastic waste oil tanks (made from MDPE) are popular because they are completely rust-proof and relatively lightweight. Steel waste oil tanks are often chosen for high-traffic workshops because they offer superior impact resistance and higher fire protection, making them extremely durable in a busy industrial environment.
Most of our bunded waste oil tanks are fitted with a high-level alarm or a float-type gauge. This provides a clear visual or audible warning when the tank is reaching capacity, allowing you to schedule a collection with your waste disposal contractor before an overfill occurs.
The tank should be installed on a flat, level, and fire-resistant base (usually concrete) capable of supporting the full weight of the tank. It should be easily accessible for waste collection tankers but situated away from high-risk areas like open drains, manholes, or combustible materials.
Generally, you can mix standard mineral-based engine and gear oils. However, you should never mix waste oil with other fluids like brake fluid, antifreeze, or solvents, as this can make the oil 'non-recyclable' and significantly increase your disposal costs. Always check with your waste carrier for their specific blending requirements.
