A steel bunded oil tank is a 'tank within a tank' construction. The inner tank holds the fuel, while the outer steel skin acts as a secondary containment (the bund). This bund is designed to hold at least 110% of the inner tank's capacity to prevent leaks or spills from reaching the environment.
In the UK, a bunded tank is mandatory for all non-domestic/commercial installations over 200 litres. For domestic properties, it is required if the capacity exceeds 2,500 litres, if the tank is within 10m of controlled water (rivers, streams), within 50m of a borehole or well, or if a spill could run over hard ground into a water source.
Steel tanks offer superior strength, increased security against fuel theft (as they are harder to drill), and higher impact resistance. Unlike plastic tanks, steel can be custom-fabricated to specific dimensions and often has a longer potential lifespan if maintained correctly with regular painting.
The tank must be installed on a flat, level, and fire-resistant base (such as concrete or stone) capable of supporting the full weight of the tank when laden. Steel tanks offer more flexibility than plastic and can often be installed on piers rather than a solid platform, depending on the manufacturer's specification.
For tanks under 3,500 litres, they should generally be at least 1.8m from a flue outlet or non-fire-rated building and 760mm from a boundary. If these distances cannot be met, a 30-minute fire-resistant wall must be installed between the tank and the structure.
Oil tanks should be installed by a 'competent person.' While you can physically place it, using an OFTEC-registered installer ensures the work complies with regional building regulations. If a non-registered person performs the installation, you must notify your local Building Control office for inspection.
To prevent external corrosion (rust), steel tanks should be inspected annually and repainted if the coating is damaged. It is also important to check for water inside the tank periodically, as condensation can build up and cause internal corrosion over time.
Steel bunded tanks are typically suitable for storing Kerosene (C1/C2), Gas Oil/Diesel (A2/D), and Bio-Diesel blends (subject to specific manufacturer confirmation).
