A steel single skin oil tank consists of a single-wall steel container designed to store heating oil. Unlike bunded tanks, they do not have a secondary outer skin for leak containment, making them a more traditional, heavy-duty, and space-saving option for low-risk installation sites.
In the UK, single skin steel tanks are generally permitted for domestic use if the capacity is under 2,500 litres and the location passes a formal OFTEC environmental risk assessment. They are not suitable for commercial sites or locations near 'controlled' waters, such as rivers, streams, or boreholes, where a bunded tank is mandatory.
Steel single skin tanks offer significantly higher security against fuel theft and vandalism, as the material is much harder to drill or breach. They are also incredibly robust, fire-resistant, and can be custom-made to bespoke dimensions to fit into specific gaps where a standard plastic tank wouldn't work.
With proper maintenance—such as annual inspections and repainting to prevent external rust—a high-quality steel single skin tank can last 20 to 30 years. Their longevity often exceeds that of plastic tanks, provided they are kept on a proper base to prevent base corrosion.
To ensure the longest possible lifespan, you should check for signs of external surface rust and touch up the paintwork as needed. It is also important to have your heating engineer check for water accumulation inside the tank during your annual boiler service, as water can cause internal corrosion over time.
Steel tanks must be installed on a solid, level, and fire-resistant base, such as concrete or paving slabs. Many steel tanks are designed with 'bearers' or feet, which raise the tank slightly off the base to allow airflow underneath, preventing moisture buildup and helping to stop corrosion at the bottom of the tank.
Yes. One of the greatest advantages of steel is the ability to order a 'bespoke' tank. If you have a specific narrow space or a height restriction, we can supply steel tanks manufactured to your exact measurements, ensuring you maximise your fuel storage in the space available.
Steel is naturally compatible with Kerosene (C1/C2) and Gas Oil. Most of our steel tanks are also suitable for HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). However, if you are storing specific high-percentage Bio-Diesel blends, please consult our technical team to ensure the internal gaskets and fittings are compatible.
