You can use a Rainwater Diverter kit. This involves cutting a small section out of your downpipe and inserting the diverter, which funnels water into the butt via a flexible hose. Once the butt is full, the water simply continues down the pipe as normal.
A stand is highly recommended. Raising the butt allows you to fit a watering can comfortably under the tap. It also provides the gravity pressure needed if you intend to connect a short length of hose for low-pressure irrigation.
Odours are usually caused by decaying organic matter like leaves. Using a diverter with a built-in filter will keep debris out. For long-term storage, you can add non-toxic rainwater treatment tablets to keep the water fresh.
Standard water butts rely on gravity, so a hosepipe will only have very low pressure. For effective hose use or to power a sprinkler, you would need to submerge a small water butt pump inside the unit.
For a small patio or greenhouse, 100L is usually sufficient. For a medium garden, 200L–250L is standard. If you have a large vegetable patch, consider linking two butts together or opting for a 500L+ industrial model.
Our water butts are made from frost-proof polyethylene. However, it is good practice to drain the water slightly in very heavy frosts to allow for ice expansion, or leave the tap open if the butt is not being used.
Safety is a priority. Our butts feature secure, often clip-on or screw-down lids to prevent accidental access. We always recommend ensuring the butt is placed on a level, stable surface or stand.
Yes. Using a 'Water Butt Link Kit,' you can connect two or more butts. Once the first one fills up, the excess water flows into the second, effectively doubling your storage capacity without needing a second diverter.
